The History and Traditions of Wedding Veils

Must Need to Know The History and Traditions of Wedding Veils!

The tradition of wearing a veil at your wedding has roots that are so ancient, they predate the white wedding gown. This tradition, like so many others, is a result of patriarchy. I'm certain we're all shocked. I wore my veil anyway. Let's start with a bigger question: Why do we wear veils?

Origin of the Bridal Veil

For thousands of years, weddings have included veils. Veils were originally used to protect the bride against evil spirits. However, over time, they became a sign of purity and chastity, signaling to all present that the bride is a virgin. Some believe that the veil would be lifted off the bride in arranged marriages so she could either be presented before or after the ceremony to the groom for his approval. According to the "right before ceremony" legend, the groom and family needed to be sure that they were receiving the right daughter. They didn't want to fall victim to a trick. According to the "after ceremony" lore, the veil will be lifted by the bride and groom after the wedding in case they don't like the results. After the ceremony, if he doesn't like what he sees, a marriage has already been finalized.

These are beautiful traditions that will make any woman feel good about herself.

Sheesh….

What if the ancient veils of Ancient Greece and Rome had a funny side-effect? The veils were flame-colored and floor-length. They not only covered the bride's eyes, but also her face. Someone had to walk the bride down the aisle because they couldn't see. The brides couldn't be seen, so someone had to ensure that she didn't fall.

The Veil in Everyday Life

The veil was not just for the bride. It was (and is in many places still) a symbol that signified marriage. A married woman is a symbol for wearing a veil. Wearing a veil in ancient Rome meant that you were controlled by your husband. In the opposite case, not wearing a veil meant that your marriage was in trouble. In the Middle Ages married women would cover their hair but not their faces. Christianity and Judaism gradually eliminated the veil from their mandatory clothing. They replaced it with hats or head scarves, sometimes with a small piece of lace. The veil is used as a sign of purity in many religions. Think about the last time that you saw a painting or statue of Mary. She wore a veil, didn't she?

The veil is a hot topic for Muslim women, especially because it has such deep roots throughout the world and in many religions. France, for example, has banned the veil. The topic is a hotly debated issue in Europe, the UK and the US. Who would have imagined that a tiny piece of fabric could cause so much controversy?

Do You Want to Wear a Veil to Your Wedding?

If you're contemplating the idea of wearing a veil to your wedding, you're not alone in navigating the rich tapestry of bridal traditions. The veil, a symbol of mystery and tradition, has been an integral part of weddings for centuries. Beyond its historical significance, a veil can add an ethereal touch to your bridal look, creating a sense of romance and elegance.

Choosing to wear a veil allows you to embrace a tradition that spans cultures and time periods. It can become a beautiful nod to the past while also making a personal statement about your connection to the rich tapestry of bridal customs. Whether you opt for a classic cathedral-length veil or a more modern birdcage veil, the choices are as diverse as the brides themselves.

Timeless Tradition and Personal Choice

Moreover, a veil can lend an air of anticipation and excitement to your wedding day. The moment when the veil is lifted, revealing the bride, is a time-honored tradition that never fails to evoke a sense of awe and admiration. It adds a touch of magic to the ceremony, creating lasting memories for both you and your guests.

Ultimately, the decision to wear a veil comes down to personal preference. If the idea resonates with you, it can become a meaningful and beautiful addition to your bridal ensemble. Whether for tradition, elegance, or simply the joy of donning a classic accessory, wearing a veil is a choice that holds the potential to make your wedding day even more special.

The Symbolic Choice

The decision to wear a veil on your wedding day is more than just a stylistic preference; it holds profound symbolic significance. Rooted in tradition, the veil has historically been a symbol of purity, modesty, and the transition into a new phase of life. However, in the contemporary wedding landscape, the choice to wear a veil is evolving into a more personal and symbolic decision.

Breath Before a Decision

You might be asking yourself how important the history and sometimes troubling nature of the veil is to you.

The same applies to veil styles as it does to all other aspects of your wedding: you can make your wedding look the way you like. It's great to wear a veil, but it doesn't mean you are less married if you don’t.
